Let’s Talk About My iPod: March 27, 2007

I couldn’t really lock in on anything today. I have been assigned a task I don’t want to fool with at work and my mind was a million miles away. Besides, I was hoping my CD order would have arrived by now. No such luck. It should be here tomorrow.

The day opened with some classic rock and closed with with some… sort of. OK, yeah, I went back for a few more alternative cuts after listening to The Byrds. The Stones’ cuts this morning were good. You know, A Bigger Bang is a better record than people give it credit for being. It, like every Stones album since Steel Wheels, was too long but it does have some great songs on it.

  1. very true about A Bigger Bang. lots of great tunes on that one. in fact, i think the real filler is not that slow Keith ballad, but that “rain fell down” thing. that one wanted to be “Undercover” but lacked a completing idea.

you know, it’s really too bad that some folks are so dismissive of everything the Stones have done in recent years….they miss out on a lot.

  2. I agree, Sir Saleski. I agree a whole lot. Steel, Voodoo, Bridges, and Bang all had some really good material. It says a lot about their golden age that people think of these as bad records. It says a lot about critics and people who never gave those albums a chance.

“Rain Fell Down” is OK with me, but songs like “Look What the Cat Drag In,” “Driving Too Fast,” and the Keith ballad could have been whacked, to my thinking. Even “Sweet Neo Con,” musically, is not all that interesting to me. Trim it from 16 down to 12 and you have a muscular, strong album. Even at 16, you still have a very good record.

I love the way Jagger sings, “Boy, did I get screwed!” on “She Saw Me Coming.” Cracks me up every time!

  3. and people can bitch and moan about how the Stones are not this, that, or the other thing. the fact is that they stopped listening long ago and should just shut their pie holes.

i saw the Stones play live last year and they totally kicked ass.

  4. Having never seen them- money and logistics never met up, I, too, heard all the naysayers and some of that crept into my head, even though I really like the more recent albums.

Then I watched them on HBO- the MSG show that’s now in 4 Flicks and I watched and listened to them shred through “Midnight Rambler.” They were great! I loved it. Even a song like “Angie,” one I’ve never liked, sounded good. That’s when I knew the “hipster” establishment had pre-determined opinions they were going to cling to, no matter what.

Let them keep running their dicksuckers about how The Stones aren’t this and aren’t that. They keep selling out shows at ridiculous ticket prices because they can still deliver something. That something may have changed over the years- it’s bound to, but they still bring the goods as far as I can tell. I’ve got to try and see this from inside the building rather than the DVD.

  5. I just went and listened to the MSG “Midnight Rambler” and it’s even better than I remembered. Great song, great performance.
