Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Make Weekend Music
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ “Too Good to Be True”:

Good friend of this site Mark Saleski writes a weekly “Friday Morning Listen” column for BC Magazine/The Mondo Project. He’s been working on it for more than three years now and its beauty is in its simplicity. It is exactly what it sounds like. He writes about whatever tickled his fancy for the last morning commute of the week. Well, that’s part of its beauty. Mark’s writing isn’t too bad, either.
Believe it or not, most Fridays feel like any other weekday until it hits me on the drive home. Today was different. I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s because I am beginning to feel just a little bit better than I have all week. Maybe it’s because Tom Petty’s “The Waiting” was the first song the jukebox in my brain dialed up.
I spent this morning listening to the marvelous Hard Promises album and it just hit me: there is something about Tom Petty’s music that is perfect for weekends. After listening to Hard Promises, I let my iPod randomly select some other Petty songs and “Too Good to Be True” from Into the Great Wide Open popped up.
ITGWO is a great and under-appreciated record. Most people know the title track and maybe “Learning to Fly.” These are both great songs and make the album worth buying on their own. The record is so much deeper than that. It’s a shame people don’t know about it. That’s why I’m here.
TheWifeToWhomI’mMarried has a religious experience every time she listens to “All The Wrong Reasons.” I was reminded this morning how great “Too Good to Be True” is. “King’s Highway” is a classic driving song and “All Or Nothin’” has a great Petty vocal and some glorious slidework from Mike Campbell.
I’m on the mend, the weather is improving, it’s Friday, and I’m listening to Tom Petty. Bring on the weekend! Tremendous.
