Billboard Beatdown: “Porcelain” by Moby

I know he can be a bit of an annoying idiot, but “Porcelain” might be one of the prettiest chill songs in recent memory.

I don’t know why I have the excruciating headache I have had since last night, but I just turned out all the lights in the room, put on my headphones, and put “Porcelain” on repeat. The suckitude has diminished by at least 15 percent in the past 10 minutes alone.

The delicate piano figure that recurs throughout the song is what gives the track substance. The airy keyboards, drum loop, and vocals create a nice ambiance but are mostly forgettable. It is those notes gently plucked on the piano and placed throughout the song that will caress your aching ear lobes and frontal lobes and any other lobes. “Porcelain” is wonderful massage of the head holes and it won’t lead to a divorce the way more conventional massages would.

It seems Moby’s moment in the sun ended as quickly as it began, but Play big time holds up and “Porcelain” is one of the more magnificent reasons why. If you haven’t dusted it off in awhile, keep Play available the next time your Excedrin can’t seem to get the job done. If you traded it in at a used CD store, you can probably still find it there. It’s worth re-adding to the collection.

If this will be your first purchase of Play, a word of warning. There is a reason most of Moby’s songs are instrumental or stingy on the words. He likes to talk. A lot. The liner notes are filled with the Gospel According to Moby. Even if you find you agree with his sacred text, you’ll still probably find yourself wanting him to shut up. Best to skip the liner notes and right to the music.

  1. Yeah, I’m not a big Moby fan but this is a gorgeous tune and a pretty good album overall. It has to catch me in just the right mood though, which it seems it did for you on a headache’s eve.

  2. Exactly, EB. I am not in the mood for Moby music all the time and that’s why I have the 80GB iPod- so that when the time is right I can dial it up pronto, and of course not all of Moby’s songs have the ‘chill’ or ‘calm’ vibe to them. The mood still has to be just right.

“Gorgeous” is a good word for it and I can admire that about the song anytime.
