Rants, Praise, Randoms, and The Blues

I am pleased to say that another in my series of Blues Music Award reviews has gone live over at BC Magazine. I finally got around to reviewing The Last of The Great Mississippi Delta Bluesmen - Live in Dallas CD. I spoke of this album when I received it in the mail and I told you how great the folks at The Blue Shoe Project were in answering my media request.

I am reminded of their courteousness and professionalism because today I saw the other side of that equation. I had requested a copy of a CD to review over a month ago. I checked back with the contact and today found out I was not going to have one sent to me. I am confident I was one of the first to send in my request. Apparently, I’m not ‘big time’ enough to get a copy.

This angers me, and I would like to have someone shot. I am frustrated because my inclination is to punish them by not discussing this album when I go buy it, as I will undoubtedly do. On the other hand, this is a record I know I’ll want to discuss. I will have to weigh this out in my mind as my anger burns against those responsible. I’m very tempted to now throw them under the bus, but I’ll resist that and thank you for enduring my rant.

Now, back to TLOTGMDB CD… it’s great, and I hope you will go read the review at BC and buy the CD from The Blue Shoe Project.

Other Randoms:

  • Now that I’ve cleared the decks of Janiva Magness and TLOTGMDB, it appears Michael Powers and Irma Thomas will likely be my last reviews for the 2007 BMAs. After that, I’ll do some award-show preview and recap.
  • Now that I’ve finished my Muddy Waters biography, I’m trying to finish the Jimi Hendrix biography that I’ve been neglecting. It’s tough to pick up in the middle of it as I’ve forgotten some of what I read before, but I’ve been surprised at how much is still with me. It’s been a good read, and I’ll probably have it done soon. As you might expect, my desire to listen to Hendrix music skyrocketed after reading from the book and I am doing just that as I type.
  • I’ve also been listening to some U2 lately (I’ll have to get a “Let’s Talk About My iPod” post up soon). I listened this morning to both versions of “Electrical Storm.” Underrated song, and I like both the ‘original’ mix and the remix version.

I am rarely a fan of remixes because most remixes tend to be electronic beats added to a previously non-electric song. It’s OK to do that and sometimes it works well, but it’s rarely interesting. Sometimes you hear remixes that choose to accentuate different sounds in the song’s mix. That’s what you get with the two versions of “Electrical Storm.” This is a theme I really need to pick up on in great detail in a post all its own.

  • I once again thank The Blue Shoe Project and the many fabulous PR contacts I’ve dealt with in the past. It is on days like today I am reminded of how much easier life is when get to deal with dedicated pros.
