I Wanted to Talk About My iPod

…but if I did, it would give away tomorrow’s big post, so I’ll have to do something else instead.

I yammered on yesterday about Sting. Tonight, I’m going to briefly yammer on about The Cure. I hadn’t listened to the Join the Dots box set in awhile and I forgot that “Burn” is on there. “Burn” is a song they contributed to the soundtrack for The Crow. That soundtrack, along with the one for Singles, is one of the defining collections of ’90s rock. Classic. “Burn” is probably my favorite song on that soundtrack. There is an aggressiveness to this one not found on many Cure songs, and I fucking like it.

So while we’re not talking about my iPod, I’ll tell you a story about this song, that movie, and me. I was living out in Seattle, “on my own,” and I was sick. It was the first time I’d gotten sick “on my own.” Anyway, I wasn’t feeling worth a damn so I stopped at a drug store and got some green death NyQuil. I came back to the place I where I was crashing, dosed up on NyQuil, and watched The Crow. That’s a bad movie to watch when you’re half out of it and dosed on NyQuil. I proceeded to have some of the most vividly fucked-up dreams of my entire life, the songs from that soundtrack reverberating in my mind.

I’m off to “dream the crow-like dream.” I’ve got something good in store for you all tomorrow…
