First Impressions: Paul McCartney’s new video, “Dance Tonight”
I never dreamed I’d be writing as much about The Beatles and McCartney as I have the last month or so, but that’s part of the reason I do this- I don’t usually like surprises but it’s fun to see where the music and your imagination might take you.
Today, it took me to YouTube. I’m not usually a YouTube kind of guy, really. I don’t trust the taste and discernment of most people so I don’t trust YouTube. Besides, I have never enjoyed the streaming experience online. The audio is not very good on its best day, and I don’t like sitting attached to my computer to watch a movie. I’m an American. I have a TV. I have a functioning brain. I don’t watch very much of it and even that’s excessive.
Anyway, I went to YouTube today to watch the video to Paul McCartney’s song “Dance Tonight.†The main reason I went is because it would give me a chance to listen to another song off the upcoming disc, Memory Almost Full.
Some quick-hit impressions:
- I know why so-called music channels don’t show videos anymore. They’re not very good television, most of them. Videos are commercials for songs and albums. It’s something to stare at while you listen to the music because some people can’t just sit down and listen to music. I’m not slagging off this video as being worse than all the rest, but even with it’s CGI visuals it’s still not something I’m going to want to watch over and over again.
- It’s a pleasant song but it’s not very interesting on either a musical or lyrical level. The song is built around Paul strumming on a mandolin, which makes it different from a lot of contemporary pop songs but that’s not enough to make it interesting. It’s a pleasant melody with lyrics that don’t say much of anything. It’s the kind of song you won’t mind listening to as a bridge between two songs you like better, but it’s not one you’re going to skip ahead in order to hear.
- Sir Paul still has enough cultural mojo that he can get Natalie Portman to be in his video.
- I bet there are a lot of you who wouldn’t have checked this video out until I namedropped Natalie Portman.
- How fucked up is it that Natalie Portman is a better draw to go check out a Paul McCartney video than the legend himself?

What did you think of it?

A fantastic surprise. This is at the top of my music video best list. It’s good to see Paul color the music with this visual and the hook “Everybody’s gonna … ” is with me, along with the thumping bottom end. Good one Paul. What did you put in the postal driver’s Tea ? I thought I recognized the driver. Was it Jack Lumber?
Children will love it.
PS Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the postman is Mackenzie Crook/ Gareth from the original The Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/theoffice/gareth/
Well, high heels, it’s all about the kids then, innit?
not sure what i think of the vid, but that’s one catchy tune right there.
Great video and even better song. Paul is at the top of his game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like “Ever Present Past” better, but this is a good song and I have some high hopes for the album.
