Music of the Moment: “The White Album”
After listening to some Matt Schofield this morning, I queued up a random Beatles’ playlist on my iPod. “Dear Prudence” came up and that got me to thinking about “The White Album.” I’m one of those folks who doesn’t think “The White Album” is some sort of transcendent classic.
I’ve always been of the opinion it’s a bloated album with some good-to-great songs weighted down by some silliness.
It’s time to re-examine that belief and put it to the test. Do I still feel that way? I know I’ve occasionally rubbed people the wrong way — check out the comments on some of these posts — with the opinions I’ve expressed and the bluntness with which they’re sometimes issued. I offer in my defense this exhibit. I’m willing to re-examine my opinion and see if, after some time has passed, my opinion might be ready for an update. It does happen on occasion. I’ve not softened on Bon Jovi and Linkin Park, but I did on Pink Floyd.
As for “The White Album,” I’ll know in a couple of hours if anything has changed for me. I picked through and listened to a couple individual songs earlier, now I’ve started at “Back in the U.S.S.R.” and am working my way forward. In a couple hours, I’ll have either shot myself because “The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill” has ruined my hearing or I’ll be proclaiming this the greatest album of all time.

interesting. i’m certainly one of the folks thinking that The White Album is “all that”. the great songs mixed in with the weird (and maybe even annoying) bits reminds me of the transitions from normal to odd in a dream.
