Music of the Moment: The White Stripes - Icky Thump
13 songs, 48 minutes. Jack and Meg — OK, let’s be honest, Jack — made a lovely little record called Icky Thump and it clocks in at 13 songs, 48 minutes. I’ve been trying for three hours to listen to this record and I keep getting interrupted. I can’t complain too loudly about the work interruptions because I’m not drawing a paycheck to listen to The Stripes (although it will be a heavenly day the day I figure out how to do that).
There have been a number of OTHER interruptions and distractions and because of this someone will feel my wrath. I actually waited a half hour to start listening because I knew I was only going to get to listen to a couple songs in the car. The first time I listen to an album, I like to hear the full thing from beginning to end. After that, I don’t mind hearing things in pieces. My Icky Thump has been shat upon, and I’m incredibly angry.
My listening process has been so disjointed I can’t even really say how I feel about the record because I’ve not gotten to listen to two songs in a row. Hell, I’ve barely been able to listen to a single song from beginning to end without having to pause. This is not the way I like to listen to an album.
I want someone to get Leotardo’d, but I don’t think I want them shot prior to their head being run over by an SUV. I simply want someone run over by a large vehicle. Oh, and I want 48 uninterrupted minutes to listen to Icky Thump.

Somehow I have yet to make it to the store to buy this. Actually there is no somehow about it, my wife won’t let me as I just purchased the 80 gig ipod and we’re out of money.
Since you can’t seem to listen to your copy, why don’t you send it to me and I’ll let you know if it is anygood.
Great album. I heard it in its entirety via that MTV leak and I am looking forward to buying it soon. Since I liked both Elephant and Get Behind Me Satan, I guess this officially makes me a White Stripes fan. Hooray!
Fortunately, Sir Brewster, I’ve finally found time to listen to it and it is indeed worth the purchase. You just need to tell your fair and lovely bride that you can’t very well have an 80GB iPod without putting music on it and no iPod is complete without Icky Thump. When that doesn’t work, whine and beg.
Sterfish, I’m with you. it is a great album. Elephant is still my favorite but I think I’m going to like this better than Get Behind Me Satan.
I’ve been contemplating stealing the dern thing, but the Stripes are one of those bands I like to actually support with my hard earned cash.
I may try to slip it into the cart while we’re shopping for other crap.
I got mine for $9.99 from Amazon. It’s a bargain at twice the price.
Keep whining.
I stole it and still got ripped off!
OK, j/k, it’s not that bad. Like most of their previous releases, it still sounds like Ted Nugent noodling around in a garage with a 16 year old drummer, but there are far, far wore things than that. It must be a Detroit thang.

dang, i wish i’d written that.
i picked up Icky Thump yesterday, and i adore every half-mad moment. it might well become my 2nd favourite White Stripes record (after Elephant) afore very long. stunning, stunning stuff.
Duke, I think you’re right on. I was telling a co-worker today I’d place it right behing Elephant as my favorite with De Stilj rating a close third.
Sorry to be late to the party, but I am bad about getting over to this outpost. After a few listens through, I really enjoy IT. I like the subtle growth and expansion of their sound. Can’t wait for the idiot reviews that will point out there’s more than 3 things going on during a song.
Can’t wait to hear what they do with the songs live. I just downloaded their Bonnaroo set and will be live with the Missus in Sept for my fourth show.
My favorite album is the one I am listening to at the time, but then I am a shill. I am partial to WBC as that was my first time with the band. Favorite song: Jolene.
I’m probably too late, El Bicho, but I’m going to try to hit up a contact to get tix to see the Stripes in Birmingham. I’ve never seen them before and would dearly love to on this tour because I just love the IT.
if that doesn’t work, try and go through the opening band.
if you think you love them now, wait until you get them live.
Selfishly I do hope they slow down their popularity. the LA forum holds 18K, and I know my seats aren’t close. last time in town they played the Greek, about 6K, but they sold out four nights. I saw the opening and closing night. In 2003, got to see them in Soma, a small club in San Diego, less than 1K.
