Listening Room: “Snowden” - Doves

Doves - Some Cities - Snowden

I watched the Ricky Hatton - Jose Castillo fight at my brother’s place this weekend. I was undecided on who I would cheer for during the fight until I found out Ricky Hatton is from Manchester, England. I love fighters from Manchester! I’m an Oasis fan, for crying out loud!

As it turns out, I had listened to a CD by a different set of Mancurian brothers on the trip over to his place — Doves.

I am more likely to take a chance on a new British band than I am a new American band. It’s one of my peculiar listening prejudices. I read about Doves on NME.com a number of times but naturally never got to hear anything by them because most American radio stations blow. I read some album reviews and listened to a few sound clips and decided to take a flyer on them. I started with the magnificent The Last Broadcast and I’ve been sold ever since.

This morning, I’m listening to “Snowden” from their 2005 album Some Cities. It’s got great glockenspiel. How many pop songs have great glockenspiel? The song was released as a single, but I don’t know that it did much on the British charts. One of the things I like about “Snowden” is the way it evolves from ambient to anthem. The song opens with ambient noodling and continues to build until it sounds like controlled chaos. It’s a great song. If you’ve never given Doves a chance, today would be a great day and “Snowden” is just one of their many great songs. Check it out, before I send Ricky Hatton after you!
