Aaron McMullan’s Yonder! Calliope? Released 7/23/2007
Tony Kornheiser has said the only reasons to have a radio show are to help your friends and crush your enemies. That, and to get free stuff. In the brief existence of this site I’ve been damned fortunate to receive many a free gift. I’ve also taken the opportunities to crush a few of the enemies of music. It is with great joy that today, I use Fanboy as a forum to help a friend. Pimpin’ is easy!
Aaron McMullan has released his debut solo album – debut solo album might be the greatest non-profane phrase the English language has ever conjured – today on the Ex Libris label. Consider the coolness of this moment… Aaron has made a proper record released by an actual label to be sold in stores. What did you ever do? Half a loaf of nothing, is what. Besides that, he name dropped my righteous white ass in the acknowledgments. How many records in the history of the whole damn planet have your name in them? Of course, I didn’t actually do anything in furtherance of the record. This is one piece of my retroactively trying to get on board and the like.
Aaron, or The Duke as he will always be known in these parts, is one of the first Renassaince men of the internet. He’s a fabulous writer, podcaster, and one hell of a talent as a singer/songwriter, as you will discover when you wrap your ears around Yonder! Calliope?.
I’m not going to review the record on account of being completely biased. I can tell you I’ve heard many of these songs in the various stages of their development. You see before he was making Big Boy records, Aaron made D.I.Y. records and released them free over the internet. Some of the songs from those early efforts have been further developed and have made it to Yonder!. In addition to knowing a few of these songs from their earlier stages, I’ve been treated to different versions of the songs as they were recorded and mixed in a proper studio.
What I’ve not yet had the chance to do is listen to Yonder! Calliope> from beginning to end. Now… if Aaron were not a friend, this would be the part where Mr. Fanboy would be explaining to all who would listen that he will not buy a copy of the record, instead waiting for one to be delivered free of charge. This being Aaron’s debut solo album, I’m only too excited to contribute some of my own sweaty dollars to the cause.
You’ll be astounded by their depth. Once you’ve heard these songs, you’re going to throw away your emo records on account of the phoniness of them all. You’ll listen to these songs and you’ll be devastated by the sound of actual emotion and genuine feeling. The fraudulent Fall Out Chemical Jacket Day Boys are silly clown shoes by way of comparison.
You should do the same.
