Music of the Moment: Robert Johnson - Complete Recordings
It can’t be a good sign for a person’s present mental condition if the first thing he listens to is Robert Johnson, can it?
I’ve been [slowly] working my way through Robert Palmer’s Deep Blues, considered one of the finest books about the blues. I’ve learned all manner of fascinating facts — although the book reads a too much like a textbook — and I finally got to the portion dealing with the life of Robert Johnson. He couldn’t have planned it any better, his myth created by the perfect blend of known and unknown.
It’s tough for me to choose a favorite, but I think “Love in Vain Blues” is probably it for me. The loneliness and heartbreak in his voice rings with a truth so deep and clear. I hope I can shake the hellhounds on my trail before the day ends…
