Garbage Week, Day 1

In honor of the release of Garbage’s first hits compilation, Absolute Garbage, they are our Featured Artist for this week.
I was on the Garbage bandwagon early, having seen a video clip of “Only Happy When it Rains” late one night on VH-1. When my friend Stu bought the record, I got a chance to preview it. That sealed the deal and in the 12 years since, I’ve bought each studio album and as many of the import singles as I could find.
I’m pretty quick to mention Garbage when I get into conversations about great debut records and often wonder how many more copies that debut might have sold and how much bigger the band might have been had “#1 Crush” been on the debut. It was a Top 40 single on the pop charts and a #1 single on the modern rock charts and is by far the best thing about the Leo DiCaprio/Claire Danes version of Romeo + Juliet. These are just a few of the themes we’ll discuss over the next seven days of Garbage bliss.

I saw Garbage by accident just before Stupid Girl charted, at The Cockpit in Leeds. In those days, my friend and I used to randomly go to clubs in the hopes of finding something good, and The Cockpit is usually a dead cert. Anyway, it was a good, if short, set and even though you could tell they were nervous, the songs shone through. Will check this out.
