Music of the Moment: Peter Karp - Shadows and Cracks

pkarp.jpgThis was supposed to be Garbage week around here, wasn’t it? It still is and we’ll be talking about Garbage later this afternoon when my package from Amazon arrives. In the meantime, a sudden change in direction can be a good thing.

Songs like “I Understand” and “The Lament” make me feel like I’m listening to that movie.I finished writing the full review of Peter Karp’s Shadows and Cracks and it’s published at BC Magazine. I think it’s funny as hell that writing a review about an album you like can sometimes be hard to do.

I spent hours rearranging and rewriting those paragraphs and I’m still not sure I nailed it, but a strange thing happened while I was working on it. One of the things I wanted to say in the review that I couldn’t seem to find a way to get into is how this album makes me think of the movie Bull Durham. I can’t tell you why, exactly, but there seems to be something very Kevin Costner/Crash Davis about some of these songs. This probably won’t make sense to anyone but me, but I hear it. I know Costner isn’t exactly the King of Cool these days, but Bull Durham and Field of Dreams are still classics.

I kept finding more things I liked about the album and as I tried to list them all and work them into the text of my review, I started to feel this runaway burst of momentum carrying me away. I’ve experienced it in the past, and it’s a fun way to write. It’s fun to be carried away by the power and joy of music. It’s even better if you still love the album that has set you all aglow when the ride has come to a complete stop.

Repeated listens to this album inspired the review and the other one-offs I’ve written around here. It should all be out of my system. I should be ready to move on to something new and I was… for about 30 minutes. I listened to most of Easy Tiger this morning, but Shadows and Cracks again called my name. This is one of those albums I’m going to be carrying with me for awhile.
