Listening Room: Ryan Adams — “Desire”
Rather than doing what needed to be done, I spent a good portion of the weekend watching House on DVD with my wife. Many have written on the outstanding use of music by David Chase in The Sopranos, and it is a tool other shows have tried to make use of. House is one of those shows.
Nearly anytime a slow song concludes an episode of the show, TheWifeToWhomI’mMarried asks, “Is that Ryan Adams?” I guess I’ve rubbed off on her after 7 years of marriage. She’s gotten pretty good at recognizing similar voices and styles. She also knows that on at least one episode, a Ryan Adams song was used and she’s looking for it. She doesn’t count herself a huge Adams fan, but does like “Come Pick Me Up” from Heartbreaker and doesn’t complain too loudly when I play his other songs in the car.
Last night, we caught the episode (”Skin Deep”) and the song used is “Desire.” It’s played twice in the episode and by the end of the second use, she found herself singing with it. She looked at me and said, “Great song.” She’s right, too. “Desire” is a gorgeous song. I can’t believe it didn’t make the cut to one of Adams’ proper albums, having only been released on Demolition, which is a collection of demos and outtakes. Moments later, I ripped several of my favorite Ryan Adams songs — “Desire,” included — and put them on her iPod for her.
I was almost as proud when she recognized Taj Mahal’s cover of “Honky Tonk Women” on a later episode.
