Confessions of a Fanboy

Saturday afternoon, singing the blues.

This little playlist began with a couple Karp songs and a song from The Twisters. I remember thinking about their being some similar sonic threads between the two artists when I was working on the Karp review but wasn’t able to find a way to work that in at the time. This afternoon, I put them side-by-side and the connection is even more striking. For fun, I slung a couple Watermelon Slim songs and one by The Rounders. All four artists use the blues as the basis for what they do, but I wouldn’t consider any of them purists.

5. “I Understand” – Peter Karp — Shadows and Cracks
6. “I Know One” – Watermelon Slim & The Workers — The Wheel Man
7. “God Knows I’m Trying” – The Rounders — Wish I Had You

In this context, Slim sounds positively old school. Peter Karp sounds sophisticated, The Twisters cool, The Rounders smoldering. It’s a great collection of talents from four artists who use the blues as a basis for what they do, but do so differently. This playlist is a great example of the diversity within the blues big tent.
