Music of the Moment: Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds - Live at Radio City

I thought I was over Dave Matthews and over buying Dave Matthews live albums. His last couple studio albums have done nothing for me and his live albums have had too many songs that repeat one to the next.dmb-radiocity.jpg I decided I was done, but began to reconsider when I saw this newest live album featured only Dave and Tim Reynolds. Live at Luther College — the only other album to feature only Matthews and Reynolds – is one of my favorite live albums and it is the only other one in Dave’s now burgeoning catalog of live music like it.

I began reconsidering my reconsideration as soon as I looked at the set list, in particular the second song on the set list. “When The World Ends.” Shit!

You see, I hate the numerous DMB songs with a reference to weed in the lyrics. I especially hate hearing them on live albums because of Dave’s fans, because every member of the audience goes batshit when the offending lyric is sung. You can practically hear the crowd gearing up in anticipation, waiting, waiting…

“I wonder if he’s gonna say it. Here it comes, I think he’s really gonna do it. Here it comes. Here it comes-”

“When the world ends, we’ll be burning one…”

“WAAAAAAAAAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOYEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!”

What a silly bunch of sheep! That is so incredibly lame and I am forced endure this foolishness every time I listen to DMB live albums because of songs like “When the World Ends” and “Jimi Thing.” Could he ever spare me the mortification and not play one of these songs? No, of course not! The guy has recorded a gazillion albums and is surrounded by amazing musicians. You’d think he could change the set list up every once in awhile and that one time – just one time – he could release a live album with none of these references and spare me the urge to throttle the shit out of somebody.

A black sheep is still a sheep, so I bought the album anyway. I’m glad I did. Even Dave’s ridiculous crowd and the awkward between-song banter can’t ruin this set. Dave’s vocals are energetic and accurate, and Tim Reynolds is one of the most amazing acoustic guitar players I’ve ever heard. His brilliance and mastery are showcased often and for extended runs and no pot-cheering stoner kids are going to ruin that for me.

Besides, he again covers Daniel Lanois’ “The Maker. I love that song.

  1. i like the weed references because i know that they piss you off.

  2. have you heard the Emmylou Harris version of “The Maker”. phenomenal.

  3. A stunning display of maturing and magnificent articulation of a coherent counterpoint. Or not.

I’ve not heard Emmylou Harris’ cover of it. Is it on one of the records Lanois produced for her?

  4. it’s on Spyboy, which appears to be out of print. geezuz!

it’s a tremendous live recording with Buddy Miller on guitar.

i’ll remedy the situation for you this evening.

  5. There’s a nice version of “the maker” on the Lanois produced Wilie Nelson album, Teatro. Emmylou does back up on that album too.
