Should You Show Rilo Kiley Your Moneymaker?
It took me all week but I finally finished my review of the new Rilo Kiley CD, Under the Blacklight.
I like it more than I thought I was going to. As I mention in the review, I love The Execution of All Things, an album I discovered through the Mondo Radio Show. Unfortunately, More Adventurous fell flat for me and I never could get my head around Jenny Lewis’ solo album. All that meant I was only moderately excited to listen my advance copy of the first single from Under the Blacklight, “The Moneymaker.
I didn’t like “The Moneymaker” when I first heard it, further convincing me that Execution was a fluke.
Then I read Mark Saleski’s enthusiastic review of Blacklight and I held out some small hope I might yet hear something special. I was excited to see an advance of the full album sitting on my desk when I got home. I quickly ripped the album to my iPod and clutched the CD as I dashed out the door to go to my softball game. After listening to “Silver Lining,” I wanted to skip the softball game and keep driving. With the way the game went, I probably should have.
My favorite songs from the album are:
- “Silver Lining”
- “Close Call”
- “Under the Blacklight”
- “Dreamworld”
- …and yes, I’ve changed my mind about “The Moneymaker”
The lesson? Sometimes your instincts can be wrong. I’m still not crazy about More Adventurous, but Execution and Blacklight are both great record. I might have to give that Jenny Lewis record another spin and see if it hits me differently this time.

Yay - someone else who didn’t like Jenny Lewis’ solo album either. I thought I was alone.
Mark should be getting kick-backs - he has racked up two (known) extra sales of this album. I had no intention on buying it nor even interest in checking it out. Read his review, listened to the opening track on their site a number of times, and jumped on the $7.99 sale at Best Buy. Very worth it.
I know, and I keep trying to dodge all the other kids who’d throw things at us for not being properly awed by it all.
It’s a very good record, one I’ll be spinning well on into the future. $7.99 isn’t bad, even if it came from SatanBestBuy.
