Under the Covers - Queensryche to Release Take Cover Nov. 13
I blame Def Leppard and it’s got to stop!
Def Leppard got some of the best reviews of their career with their covers album, Yeah!. Proving what we’ve always suspected — the music industry has no new ideas — Poison was allowed to follow suit. Now, it’s Queensryche’s turn to try their hand at a covers album. Take Cover will be in stores Nov. 13.
Let me be very clear on this point: Queensryche is at least quantum leaps beyond Poison. That doesn’t mean I think this is a good idea. At least lead singer Geoff Tate understands that.
“We’ll never top the originals; they’re classics for a reason,” said Tate.
Among the songs slated for inclusion:
- Queen – “Innuendo”
- Pink Floyd – “Welcome to the Machine”
- U2 – “Bullet the Blue Sky”
- Peter Gabriel – “Red Rain”
- Jesus Christ Superstar – “Heaven On Their Minds”
- O’Jays – “For Love of Money”
- Buffalo Springfield – “For What It’s Worth”
- The Police – “Synchronicity II”
That I think it’s a bad idea doesn’t mean this can’t also be good. I didn’t like the idea of Springsteen doing The Seeger Sessions. I like the album even if it isn’t what I wanted. I thought there was a strong possibility that Yeah! was going to be terrible. It’s really not. I love their version of “Drive-in Saturday.” Maybe I’ll love Take Cover…
So, let’s take a closer look at some of Queensyrche’s selections. Raise your hand if you’re surprised to see Pink Floyd on the list. Yeah, me neither.
“Bullet the Blue Sky” has some potential. Tate might really be able to sink his teeth into that one. Queensryche, and Tate in particular, have always had a flair for the dramatic and “Bullet” is one of U2’s more dramatic songs. It is also one of their more guitar-driven songs and should give Wilton and Mike Stone something to play with.

We’re thinking alike today, Josh.
Lep’s “Yeah!” isn’t even “not terrible.” It’s utterly fantastic. Friggin’ love that album. Totally unexpected and continues to be really fun to listen to, which is a factor covers-albums rarely maintain beyond the first handful of plays.
And, hey, you didn’t mention it, but that Tesla covers disc is pretty damned good too. The second disc (previously only available at concerts (it was included in the price of tickets)) will be available for purchase later in September. It appears to have the better song selection, too.
You’re right, Tom, it was far from terrible and is actually a (mostly) great listen.
I had forgotten Tesla had that covers album. I haven’t heard a note of it. Bust a Nut is still one of my favorite albums from that era. I might have to be on the lookout for that in September.
“For The Love Of Money”?
i have a great imagine but that’s a tough one…my guess is that they’re slow it down like Cornell did with Billy Jean.
Queensryche is an awesome band… and just by them attempting to cover Innuendo is reason enough to buy the disc. The Queen song Innuendo is a brilliant masterpiece of a song. I am sure Ryche will rock it out of the box!! The song is a must listen for all either the Queen version and hopefully the Queensryche version…
