Music of The Moment: The Word!
I’m here to evangelize your ass with the instrumental prowess and power of The Word!
The Word was a one-off collaboration between Robert Randolph, John Medeski, and The North Mississippi All-Stars — if by collaboration you mean a showcase for the Sacred Steel wizardry of Robert Randolph. No slight is intended toward the legendary Medeski nor the talented young men of the All-Stars; they’re all wonderful musicians and they provide a rich sonic backdrop for Randolph.
There is no label for music like this. It defies labels which is fine because it doesn’t need a label, it needs ears and hearts. It’s not so much that you’re dead if you can’t feel anything when you listen to this, it’s that you can’t feel nothing when you hear it. It’s just not possible.
The good news is that it seems this extraordinary album is back in print. When I bought it, it was out of stock everywhere and seemed to be out of print so I bought an overpriced used copy. I just checked at Amazon out of curiosity and they claim to have on in stock. I’m half tempted to buy another copy just to be on the safe side. Yes, it’s that good.

I’m surprised this record isn’t better known, but it’s limited availability probably explains a lot of that. But dang, it’s a righteous record. Good find, Josh.
Wurd.
Righteous is just the right word for that record, Pico. It is a righteous record and righteousness never sounded so cool.
