Music of the Moment: King’s X - Dogman
GIVE ME A DOLLAR OR GIVE ME 50 CENTS!
I don’t know why it happens but every year around my birthday – still time for you to send those gifts, I might add — I wind up going through a King’s X phase. I’m blaming Tom Johnson for this, simply because he’s the biggest King’s X fan I know.
I started out with “Faith Hope Love” from Faith Hope Love because I love its epic sprawl. It’s a shame no label cares about King’s X. The early albums could use a nice re-mastering. Not only will they not be re-mastered, we should all count ourselves lucky some of the records are still in print at all.
After “FHL,” I listened to a live version of one of my favorite KX songs, “Mississippi Moon.” The studio version is on Ear Candy, the first KX album I ever bought and by the slimmest of margins is my favorite. I listened to a couple off Ogre Tones, but have now settled on Dogman.
Great record. This is probably their most consistent album. It still sounds good, too. Brendan O’Brien did a nice job producing it and the band brought a nice group of songs together.
Long live King’s X!

Hey man, fu– . . . no, wait: right on! I’m hoping you’ve also discovered the two Poundhound albums as well as “DuG”’s solo album (not sure why the distinction - they’re all about Doug either way.) They basically sound like extra King’s X albums. Oooh, and Supershine, his project with one of the dudes from Trouble, I believe it is. Once again, another side project that sounds like KX (and Jerry plays drums on some tracks, too.) Dogman, however, is probably my overall favorite. But then I’ve got a pretty soft spot for every album.
I saw them on the Ear Candy tour - it was just incredible. Almost a religious experience, actually. Not only were they great, but the opening act was actually pretty damned good, too - Saigon Kick. They put on a mesmerizing show that made me a fan. Still really dig their last couple of albums, actually.
