Nick Moss: A Cure For the SummerTime Blues

Some call it having a case of the Mondays, some lament rainy days and Mondays, T-Bone Walker called it “Stormy Monday.” The concept of Mondays being suckass isn’t exactly a new one. Every once in awhile, the storm clouds are late and don’t quite make it over my head on a Monday. Today was one of those Mondays thanks to Nick Moss, his Flip Tops, and Blue Bella Records.

I came home for lunch and waiting for me was a small post office box from Blue Bella. The box bore a stamp reading “We’ve Got a Deep Bag of Chicago Blues.” Inside the box was a burlap bag filled with CDs. How cool is that? Blue Bella delivers the best press packages!

Inside that deep bag was the new double album from Moss, Play It ‘Til Tomorrow, Gerry Hundt’s debut solo record Since Way Back, The Kilborn Alley Blues Band’s Tear Chicago Down, and Bill Lumpkin’s “Hard Pill To Swallow. All four albums will be released October 9. That is going to be a great day for the blues.

There was never any doubt in my mind I’d start with Moss and with all due respect to the other three albums — as yet unheard — I made the right call. I try very hard not to make pronouncements about what will and won’t make my album of the year list and where an album might be ranked, but I’m comfortable telling you I am listening to one of the premier blues releases of 2007.

If only every Monday could be this good.
