There’s been a lot of talk about this Led Zeppelin “reunion” gig scheduled for November in the UK. It’s not a real reunion because drummer John Bonham died on this day in 1980. His son, Jason, will fill in when the rest of the band performs at the tribute to the late Ahmet Ertegun. Bonham died in his bed after a night of heavy drinking. He was 32.
In addition to the one-off “reunion,” Led Zeppelin has planned a slew of archival releases for November including a new 2-CD compilation as well as an expanded version of their classic film and its accompanying soundtrack The Song Remains The Same.
The compilation, Mothership will be released in multiple formats. The standard package will be 2 CDs. There will be a deluxe edition with 2 CD and a DVD with 90 minutes of live footage and an ultra deluxe edition. Audiophiles and vinyl lovers will be happy to know there will be a 4-LP edition of Mothership with collectible memorabilia.
The tracks for the compilation were personally selected by Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones. I don’t know if the tracks have been re-mastered again or if these are the same re-mastered tracks as have appeared on previous compilations and collections. Either way, these tracks will not be presented as they were in their initial incarnation on CD, which is probably a good thing. Mothership will be released November 13.

Of greater interest to diehard fans than the new compilation will be the restored – I can’t wait to hear the fans debate whether this restoration is an improvement or heavy-handed tinkering — The Song Remains the Same. The soundtrack included highlights from the band’s three-night run at Madison Square Garden. The newly remixed and remastered soundtrack will include six songs not originally included on that album.
The DVD presentation of the movie will be released in standard definition and both HD formats (HD-DVD and Blu-Ray). All 14 songs from the original concert will be included for the first time ever, as well as more than 40 minutes of bonus footage.
The DVD will be released in a deluxe edition and a collector’s edition. The collector’s edition will include a collectible vintage T-shirt with original album artwork design, soundtrack CD, lobby cards, reproductions of original premiere invites, tour schedule, and more.
“We have revisited The Song Remains The Same,” says Jimmy Page, “and can now offer the complete set as played at Madison Square Garden. This differs substantially from the original soundtrack released in 1976, and highlights the technical prowess of Kevin Shirley, who worked with us on How The West Was Won. When it comes to The Song Remains The Same, the expansion of the DVD and soundtrack are as good as it gets on the Led Zeppelin wish list.”
