Feeling Gravity Pull Me Towards the New R.E.M. Live Album
I’m feeling gravity’s pull, bitches, but I’m about to blow this scene and start the weekend.
I don’t know if Tuatara subconsciously called out R.E.M. for me, but I was overpowered by the sudden urge to hear “Feeling Gravity’s Pull” and it’s best not to fight these things. Thinking of this song reminded me R.E.M.’s first ever live album (which will also feature a companion DVD) is being released in a few weeks.
I went to Amazon to get the exact date and was shocked and horrified by what I saw. That might be the worst cover I’ve ever seen in my life. I’ve got nieces and nephews, for God’s sake. I can’t leave that cover around and have them seeing that. I’d rather they find my imaginary stash of Playboys and pron than see… THAT. I’ve got fuckin’ standards of decency.
The set list does have some goodies throughout the band’s career. Unfortunately, this show is taken from the Around the Sun tour and the band exercised their right to promote that album by playing several songs from it. It’s possible I’ll like these songs better in the live setting than I did on the album. In fact, it’s almost a given because I hated most of these songs on the album. “Leaving New York” is a stunner and will forever be one of the band’s 5-10 best songs. The rest of ATS? I can’t like it any less, so any movement will be upwards.
Live will be released Oct. 16.

this is madness. they should release the rehearsal shows for the upcoming album instead. very inspired play, great new tunes, fantastic old ones, and no yawners from that one record.
I agree, the rehearsal shows were far more interesting.
Their new material is good - or at least a step back up from AtS? I’d be happy hearing something along the lines of Reveal, actually. I really, really liked that album. But “better than AtS” will do.
It’s a little odd to me that REM released this set, because they don’t even like ATS. I can handle ‘Leaving New York’ and ‘The Outsiders,’ and maybe ‘Electron Blue,’ but the rest is the most boring group of songs REM has ever released.
