Springsteen’s Magic Tour Chronicles: Oct. 9, 2007 East Rutherford, NJ #1
I finished two of my Blue Bella reviews yesterday, covering Nick Moss & The Flip Tops and Gerry Hundt, so now it’s time to get back to business following Bruce Springsteen across America on his Magic tour. Remember, Confessions of a Fanboy is your Magic tour world headquarters. This is the place for Bruce Springsteen fans who actually like Bruce Springsteen.
Last night’s show was the first of two in New Jersey, quite obviously Bruce’s home state. If you check out Bruce’s official web site, you can see the handwritten set lists that are presumably written before the show. As you’re about to see, what he writes and what he plays can be two different things. A couple songs were scratched last night, in part due to alleged keyboard troubles with Roy’s piano. I can’t confirm that, I simply report the rumors.
As far as set lists go, this one seems to be pretty standard for what’s been played so far. There weren’t any big surprises, but there aren’t any songs on here I wouldn’t love to hear. Expect things to change for tonight’s second Jersey show. Rumor has it “Jungleland” was soundchecked. Maybe that’s how Roy (allegedly) broke his piano. They better have it fixed if they’re going to try that one tonight.

best pair of comments seen at btx:
1. “Darlington County = bathroom break”
2. “If you you don’t like Darlington County, stay the fuck home!”
that had me giggling.
I’m going to start charging $80 for people to use my shitter. Apparently people will pay a lot of money to take bathroom breaks. I’m going to make a fortune.
Still waiting for The Price You Pay here.
I’m going to be doing a feature soon on my “Ultimate Springsteen Set List…”
“The Price You Pay” is a good one. I keep thinking “Adam Raised a Cain,” “Cadillac Ranch,” and “Don’t Look Back” would be great in the #2 slot right after “Radio Nowhere.”
they played Adam tonight.
bastards!
I saw that btx exchange last night, too, and I had the same reaction.
Oh, and I think there are several really nice candidates to follow ‘Radio Nowhere,’ including:
Prove It All Night
The Ties That Bind
Don’t Look Back
Loose Ends
Atlantic City (full band)
Pink Cadillac
Murder Inc.
Lucky Town
Streets of Fire
Something in the Night
Spirit in the Night
Just to name a few.
Just to name a few. So many possibilities.
All good songs, some better fits for the #2 in the show than others. “Spirit in the Night” is one I’d put further down the set list, but I’d like to hear it played regularly. “Pink Cadillac” would be a gas after “Radio Nowhere,” but I don’t think he’d ever do it.
I’m going to have to spend some time thinking about my Ultimate Set List for a Bruce/E-Street show and get it posted up here.
I actually heard ‘Spirit in the Night’ as the first encore in Charlotte on the reunion tour in 2000. When the lights came back up, Bruce was lying flat on his back on Roy’s piano, and then Clarence’s sax started in. I thought the ladies were going to start throwing their nickers.
It was a highlight, to be sure. Maybe it would be better later. I think we are on to something with ‘Pink Cadillac’ as the second song.
“Spirit” is such a great song. I love the Hammersmith version!
