The Ballad of Magic, Part III: Salt I Have, Now I Need Popcorn

magic.jpgI’ve regaled you with the epic tale of my quest to acquire the Magic. Now that I’ve got it, what do I think of it?

That’s a more complicated question than you might think. For starters, I haven’t had enough uninterrupted listening time. I immediately ripped the album to my iPod so I could have it at work today. Unfortunately, actual work intruded on my pristine listening experience so I am still sorting it all out. I have been able to listen to the disc multiple times straight through but I am still learning some of these songs.

There are some instantly catchy songs and those are already among my favorite Springsteen songs. “Livin’ in the Future” is vital and quintessential Springsteen. It’s a glorious song that would have sounded just fine on The River or Born in The U.S.A. I’d like both albums better by at least 20 percent if “Livin’ in the Future” were on either of them. It really is that great. It’s my favorite song on the disc and I just can’t imagine ever tiring of it.

There are also songs that require a little more attention and I am answering duty’s call. It’s a tough job, but that’s what I’m here for.
