Bruce Springsteen Magic Tour Chronicles: Oct. 2, 2007 — Hartford, Connecticut
Welcome to your Magic Tour World Headquarters.
The first night of Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band’s Magic tour is in the books. I wasn’t there but I know someone who was. I don’t know if that makes me feel better or worse.
The set list doesn’t have much in the way of surprises compared to what was played in the warmup gigs leading to last night’s official tour debut, but this is a strong set. By my count, eight of Magic’s 11 songs were played, not counting hidden track “Terry’s Song.”
The only songs not played from Magic were “You’ll Be Coming Down,” “Your Own Worst Enemy,” and “I’ll Work For Your Love.” I’m surprised about the first of those, not the other two. “Enemy” and “Love” are good songs but might not translate as well live. “You’ll Be Coming Down” is a natural to be played among these songs with its inspired Clarence Clemons sax solo. I’d be shocked if this doesn’t get played a few times along the way.
As for the oldies, it’s all about “Thundercrack.” “Thundercrack” is easily my favorite song on Tracks, and there are some good ones on that set. 11 will not forgive me if I don’t mention he would prefer “Santa Ana,” but he respects the “Thundercrack.” In fact, as I chronicle this tour there will be an obligatory 11/”Santa Ana” moment in each post unless or until it gets played. I just thought you’d like to know.
The other oldie that ought to put a smile on some faces is “Darlington County.” “DC” is a popular non-single track from Born in the USA, and I’m willing to bet it brought the house down. It’s such an energetic song that gives Steve a chance to sing some backup, Danny a chance to flash that organ, Big Man to blow some big horn, and the guitars a chance to rock out a little.

i’m am here to state that the guitars did indeed rock out. i have the ringing ears to prove it!!
Words cannot properly convey how completely fuckin’ jealous I am of your good fortune. I’ll go to untold lengths to see that I am at a show when one comes nearby.
Guys….I’ve seen 3 Springsteen shows in my entire life (other than dvd’s) Oct 2, 2007 Hartford, Nov 19, 2007 and Aug 2, 2008 (Gillette Sta, MA). To compare the three? I thought he looked slow, a little chubby almost high during the first show. Had a glassy look in his eyes. The fact that the new cd just came out that day left a lot of people not knowing most of the songs and that made some songs kind of quiet. The second show at Boston Garden was one of the top 5 nights of my entire 50 years on this earth. 18000 people raising holly hell…….it was unbelievable. The show at Gillette was great too after being delayed for over an hour by a thunder/lightning storm the band played for 3 hours smashing through Foxboro’s 11pm curfew for concerts ending at 12:20AM…..they played an hour AFTER the house lights came on……truly a show of power. I hope I can see them again in my lifetime it truly is worth any amount of money you have to pay.
