Morning Commute: Long Road Out of Eden
I didn’t get a chance to finish listening to Long Road Out of Eden last night, so I picked up where I left off.
Actually that’s not true. I started over- except that I didn’t. I started with the second song, “How Long” because I can’t take “No More Walks in the Wood.” It’s a lovely two minutes of melody-free harmony. It’s two minutes of somber accusations and lecture. It’s as if The Eagles wanted to try their hand at Gregorian chant. It’s not bad but I just can’t take it.
I’ve now heard most of the first disc and this is a very pleasant listen. The first disc, from what I’ve read from other sources, is the more laid-back of the two. The second disc is supposed to have more of the uptempo rockers. I will probably like the first disc more because I’ve always preferred mellow Eagles to rocker Eagles.
10 songs in and I don’t feel like $11.88 and a trip to Wal-Mart were too high a price to pay.

I listened to the whole thing and was pleasantly surprised by it, and how consistently good it is despite all the change ups in tempo, styles and topics. And it’s not like I’m an Eagles fan (I’ll acknowledge that they were talented but Jesus, they were way, way overplayed in the seventies). in contrast, this record sounds like they gave a damn about the music, something that was obviously missing from The Long Run. And I can listen to those gorgeous harmonies all days.
Since I don’t listen to the radio much nowadays, I’ll probably appreciate Long Road Out Of Eden much better. And yes, at $11.88, it’s a heckuva deal.
Pico, I figure to be slightly less effusive in my praise not that I’ve made it all the way through but I do like the record.
I worked at a classic rock station in college and we were still overplaying them… in the ’90s.
Just listened to it another time and i’m slightly less effusive, too. There’s no out and out clunkers on here, but there are several songs that would be a generic selection for adult contemporary radio play. And yet, there are still some songs that really stand out. “What Do I Do With My Heart” is one of the better breakup song I’ve heard in a while. “Frail Grasp On The Big Picture” is Henley at his flip-off best. And “Last Good Time In Town” is an instant Joe Walsh classic.
I got diminishing returns this time around but I’m still blown away at how good it is all things considered.
Did I mention that it’s a heckuva deal at $11.88?
