Music of the Moment: U2 - “Running To Stand Still”

Is it just me, or is “Running to Stand Still” the most incredible moment on The Joshua Tree?

The first time I listened to this album — only a few years ago — I had in my head this song would be another U2 anthem a la “Where The Streets Have No Name.” I didn’t dislike “Running,” but I had a hard time shelving the pre-conceived notions I’d attached to the title.

I don’t know when those notions faded, but they have. All that remains are the feelings this stirs; feelings that give me goosebumps and wake up pieces of my slumbering innards that get the day off most of the time.

  1. I completely agree with you. It is a song that stops you dead in your tracks. Have you heard any live version of it? If you haven’t, it is definitely worth tracking down (I could send you one) as it is always incredible.

  2. Lily, the only live version I’ve heard is on the Vertigo DVD. I wish the song had been performed at the July 4, 1987 show from Paris that comes with the 20th Anniversary TJT box. Unfortunately, it’s not.

Do you have a favorite live version?

  3. I’ve just been reminded that I have “Running to Stand Still” on my Zoo TV DVD as well as Rattle & Hum. I don’t know why I drew a previous blank.

Also, it turns out the song WAS performed at that Paris show. I listened to it last night. Amazon didn’t have the complete listing (Or I just missed it).

Wow, I must have been on drugs when I commented yesterday.

  4. It really is a brilliant, jaw-droppingly great song.

And aren’t you always on drugs?

  5. If I’m not, I should be.
