Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers to Play Super Bowl XLII

Oh, glory! The Super Bowl won’t be that entertaining with the way the Patriots are going to dismantle whomever is put in front of them. At least the halftime show will be worthwhile.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers have been booked as this year’s halftime entertainment. It’s about time! It’s about time we get a great American band to headline one of America’s greatest parties. Ever since Janet Jackson’s debacle, the NFL has been plucking big name acts for the big stage. They’ve been safe and they’ve mostly been British until Prince was booked last year. Before his Royal Purple Weirdness, the NFL booked icons Paul McCartney and The Rolling Stones.

I like Prince. A lot. I love The Stones and McCartney, but Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are special to me. I’m thrilled they are being welcomed into this prestigious company. The man belongs and as anyone who has seen the live Gainesville performance packaged with the Runnin’ Down a Dream film can attest, these guys are still a top live act at the top of their game. They deserve this kind of stage and I really believe they’ll be the most entertaining part of the festivities of February 3, 2008.

The NFL got it right and I’ll be watching.

  1. i dunno (not about Petty, he’s great)…but i’m really thinking that the pats aren’t going to make it to the superbowl.

  2. Have faith, Sir Saleski. The Patriots and Petty will both rock Super Bowl XLII.

  3. Do you know if Petty is getting paid? Hearing about the former players living in homeless shelters and not able to pay their medical bills turns my stomach to the whole endeavor. How about the NFL use 1% of the money they make off the Superbowl and help the men who built the league?
