Mark Saleski is Trying to Kill My Marriage, and He Sent Ronnie Earl To Do It
Should TheWifeToWhomI’mMarried ever leave me, I know how the divorce decree will read when the papers arrive. Reason for divorce? Mark Saleski. TWTWIM, gracious and understanding woman that she is, allowed me to take us closer to the brink of bankruptcy with another CD purchase– patience of a saint, that woman! Seriously.
I went to the store planning to buy one thing, but came out with another and that is entirely the fault of Mr. Saleski.
Yes, our boyo Mark has once again turned me on to an artist I could no longer resist. This one took a little longer than some of his suggestions, but my fate was sealed long ago. Mark and I had been discussing the relative merits of Joe Satriani when he told me about Ronnie Earl. He’d not had much luck getting into Satriani at that point – I think he’s since softened to some degree. It was then that he told about this cat named Ronnie Earl and sent me a couple files to listen to. I listened to them, agreed they were good, and moved on without ever giving it that much thought.
After finding what I thought I wanted, I wandered over to the blues section. I don’t often wander there in most stores because I expect to find disappointment. Nothing against the great B.B. King, but you’re lucky if most stores carry anything more than a few budget B.B. compilations. Tonight, I was in luck. I looked up and and saw a Ronnie Earl divider on the rack. I remembered Mark mentioning in his Tuesday Morning Purchase that Earl had released a new CD this year. I didn’t really expect it to be in stock but I looked anyway. There it was. Radio Hope.
I held it in my hands and wondered if I was in the mood to try something new tonight. I flipped the disc over in my hands and skimmed the titles. The deal was sealed when I saw the title to the penultimate track: “Blues for Otis Rush.â€
Any man who has the good taste to dedicate a song in my hero Otis’ honor deserves my time, attention, and money. Done.
You’re a bad man, Mark Saleski. Thanks.

it’s all a part of my evil master plan.
…whatever that is.
Have you bought it yet?
no, i actually haven’t bought anything in a while.
…but i suspect you’re really going to love it. Earl really has his own style, and it has nothing to do with the guitar pyrotechnics.
This is actually a live album from two shows done in MA. It was apparently filmed as well, so the DVD might be forthcoming.
One thing I like about Earl is something he shares in common with Satriani: there are actual songs rather than groupings of exercises. He’s a hell of a player and this is a great set.
You gotta ask for this for Christmas, man.
Shit, now I’ve got to get this. Thanks Mark, I’ll send my divorce lawyer bills to you, too. ;&)
So, it’s that good? Josh, if I like Satch, will I like this dude?
Do I risk my marrirage too?
wait..I have inlaws waiting for suggestions for me..
Sir Mary, I think there’s a high probability you’ll like this one. It’s not so much because of a Satch/Earl connection as it is a hunch. This is a glorious record. The in-laws need to hook you up.
its’ on my list now : )
