Music of the Moment: Kilborn Alley Blues Band - Tear Chicago Down

I hadn’t been ignoring Kilborn Alley on purpose. I’ve liked everything Blue Bella records has ever sent me and I fully intended to give Kilborn Alley Blues Band’s Tear Chicago Down a thorough listen and writeup as soon as it arrived alongside Nick Moss’ Play it ‘Til Tomorrow. The problem is, I’m easily distracted. I just never got back to it until yesterday when it was nominated for Best Contemporary Blues album at the 2008 Blues Music Awards.

That simple reminder has turned me on to a great Chicago blues disc. I can’t believe I’ve had it for two months and never gotten around to listening to it and talking about it!

This brief interruption of my Beatles phase is a welcome one if only because it’s allowed me to discover another great blues band. So far, my favorite cuts on the record are:

1) Tear Chicago Down
2) Christmas in County
3) Crazier Things (Nice guest mandolin work from Gerry Hundt)
4) Come Home Soon (a song about the war in Iraq that isn’t preachy)

I’m going to try to find time to write up something a little more detailed. Until then, strongly consider throwing this album into the stocking of a blues lover in your life. Consider throwing this album in the stocking of the classic rock lover in your life.
