Good Morning, Fab Four Friends

It’s one of those savage Mondays and I’m sure there’s some line somewhere about music and savage but I just don’t care enough to try to get the cliche right. My brain is bruised and the rest of me doesn’t feel so fuckin’ fabulous either.

So after a quick blues relapse tied to the BMA nominations, I’ve returned to my regularly scheduled Beatles OD-athon. I listened to “Yes It Is” from Past Masters Vol. 1 a few times today and then decided to listen to some of those early Beatles’ records.

I don’t listen to the early MopTops era that often. I like that period and some of those songs are brilliant, but the band got more interesting as they progressed. For example, I rarely listen to Beatles For Sale.

I started this morning with Help!, which is a better record than I remember. There are the “famous” songs, but today I (re)discovered “The Night Before.” I know I’ve listened to it before but it never struck a chord with me until today, similar to my recent fascination with “Things We Said Today.” I love (re)discovering songs for the first time!

Now I’ve moved on to With The Beatles, which is pleasant but probably not one I’m going to like as much as Help!.

  1. Their cover of “till there was you” is worth the listen to alone.

  2. That’s always been a favorite of mine on that album; a definite high point, Sir.
