Listening Room: “Here Comes The Sun” — The Beatles
One of the traditions of our S. Carolina trips is that TWTWIM and our hosts like to rent and watch “scary” movies. I’ve never been a fan of the so-called horror genre, so I sit in the living room with them and retreat to the safe confines of my iPod. Once again, that is what is at play.
I got George Harrison’s Concert for Bangladesh for Christmas and I’ve been listening to it on and off the past few days. One of the highlights is the live version of “Here Comes the Sun;” a song that might well be my favorite Beatles track of all time.
After listening to that lovely live version, I’m now listening to the one from Abbey Road. I think the best part of the song might be the “middle 8″ section (”sun, sun, sun here it comes) bit with that neat little guitar lick George plays.
I don’t know if I’ve told the story before — I probably have — but in case I haven’t here it goes. I worked the weekend overnight shift at a classic rock station in college. My shift ended at 6 a.m. and the last song I’d play before leaving was always “Here Comes the Sun.” I know it’s not the most creative or original idea, but it is the perfect way to start the day. What an absolute gem of a song!

That was the song that played just after “you may kiss the bride” at my wedding.
