7 Days of Satriani, The Finale
I can’t possibly tell you how much fun I’ve had reliving the recorded works of one of my heroes, Joe Satriani, and in particular his most famous and finest album Surfing With the Alien. For starters, I’m thrilled I’ve actually managed to keep this little miniseries updated each day. It’s also been fun because I’ve spent a lot of time listening to Surfing as well as his other albums. It’s cool because I love these records and this has been a nice excuse to spend extra time listening to records I love but don’t think about on a daily basis.
Two songs that have jumped out at me this past week are “War” from The Extremist and “Lords of Karma” from Surfing. “Karma” was on repeat throughout the day today as I completed my full-length review of Surfing for BC Magazine. The rideout lick in particular has wormed its way in my head. It’s amazing how quickly the song turns from the established melody at the beginning to that cool rideout. It’s almost like two distinct songs but the segue is so smooth you don’t realize you’ve been transported until after it’s happened. “War” has been on repeat throughout the evening at home. It is such a muscular riff.
And with that, we bring the 7 Days to a close. If you haven’t already bought your 20th Anniversary copy, you should. It’s absolutely worth the money no matter how many times you’ve bought it.
