Bill Frisell, Rahim AlHaj, and The Power of Music

I’ve gushed often about the many musical projects that have been touched by the hands of Barrett Martin. I’ve extolled the virtues of the different bands he’s played in (Screaming Trees, Tuatara) and his solo records.

In addition to all the music he’s directly responsible for helping to create, Martin owns his own independent music label, Fast Horse Recordings. The latest release from Fast Horse comes from renowned Iraqi oud player Rahim AlHaj. I’m listening to Home Again right now and plan to write about the record and the music in the coming days, but I doubt I’ll be able to top what jazz mad scientist Bill Frisell has said already said about it.

“Music is good. I feel lucky to have heard Rahim AlHaj. His music is beautiful, mysterious, and powerful. I’ve never heard anything like it. He has his own voice — his own sound. As the world becomes more and more complicated, confusing, and frightening, there is on thing I am certain of — Music is good. Music can bring people together. Music has power. Music heals. What Rahim is doing is important. I hope many people will have that chance to hear his new album, Home Again, made up of his own very personal compositions. Listen. He is an inspiration. Music is good.”
