Digging Deeper into the Big Bag of Chicago Blues
Blue Bella Records released four new albums earlier this month (Oct. 9). I’ve reviewed two of them for Blogcritics — Nick Moss & The Flip Tops and Gerry Hundt — and talked about both here on the site.
I’ve now finally gotten the chance to go back to listen to the two I hadn’t yet reviewed or discussed in much detail. First up… the blues harp of Bill Lupkin. Lupkin has knocked around Chicago for years and like cohort Nick Moss played with the great Jimmy Rogers.
Hard Pill to Swallow is his second record for Blue Bella, and he’s joined by both Moss and Hundt. I’m halfway through the record and I’m enjoying it. Lupkin has a very authentic harp sound and is a pleasant vocalist. I need to wait until I’ve heard the full disc to write a review, but I’m going to go ahead and call Pill a winner.

I think fans will be pleased with the raw energy of this seriously strong body of work.
