If It Tastes Like Butter, But It’s Not: Gerry Hundt’s Mandolin Blues

Gerry Hundt will tell you he’s not the first guy to try to make his blues on a mandolin, but it was a brand new concept to me.

This is one of the four new releases from Blue Bella Records I’ve mentioned and it’s just an amazing record. On the one hand, it’s nothing more than a very good, standard-issue Chicago blues record. On the other, you’ve probably never heard anything quite like it. I know I haven’t.

Gerry Hundt’s “day job” is multi-instrumentalist for Nick Moss’ Flip Tops. On Since Way Back, Nick and the other Flip Tops back Hundt along with fellow Blue Bella artists Bill Lumpkin (harmonica) and Kilborn Alley Blues Band guitarist Josh Stimmel.
