Lanois: U2 Finished Writing Album
Unos, dos, tres, catorce!
U2’s new album has been written, according to an NME interview with longtime collaborator Daniel Lanois.
Lanois, who has co-produced several U2 albums with the band and Brian Eno, was invited to help the band write for the as-yet-untitled follow-up to 2004’s How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. Eno was also present for these writing sessions.
“We’ve been invited as writers this time. I did three writing sessions with Eno and U2- one in Fez Morocco; two in France…the record’s kind of making itself.”
U2’s best work has been made when Eno and/or Lanois was at the helm. Their involvement early on in the project is a good sign. Let’s hope one or both of them is at the console when the album is recorded. Maybe they’ll get it right the first time if they do. Atomic Bomb was essentially recorded twice. The first run at the album, recorded with Chris Thomas, was rubbished and the band re-recorded it with Steve Lilywhite.
The new disc is currently scheduled for a 2008 release.

And here I was, turning the first 31 seconds of “Bullet the Blue Sky” into a ringtone for my iPhone, when I saw this article. Delightful!
Very good news, isn’t it, Phillip? That’s a great intro, even if it’s not one of my favorite U2 songs. I like it but it hasn’t aged as well for me as some of the other songs from Joshua Tree.
