Mail Call: You Don’t Have to Get New Releases on Tuesday…
I’m sure something interesting was released today, but I don’t know what it was. What I do know is I received two packages today- two packages containing the three CDs I ordered last week.
So far, I have listened to the two Tuatara releases and am halfway through The Byrds’ Fifth Dimension. I really hate that I was so late getting acquainted with The Byrds. What a marvelous and underappreciated band. Those first albums with the original lineup and Sweetheart of the Rodeo are some of the best albums out there. That four-album run from Mr. Tambourine Man through Younger Than Yesterday is about as stout as any in rock history. That’s some consistency there.
Just off the top of my head, The Stones run from Beggars through Exile is probably the best in rock history. I haven’t looked in depth enough or really thought this through but I’m comfortable saying you wouldn’t name to many other runs before getting to that one by The Byrds.
As for the Tuatara records, Trading is fucking marvelous. The Loading Program is going to need further investigation. What it is, is a remix album. DJ Spooky and a few other of those DJ types have remixed some Tuatara songs. I’m not always big for electronic and DJ music, but this interesting because Tuatara’s songs were written as soundscapes and sonic experiments to begin with. Remixing them in this manner doesn’t necessarily destroy or diminish the song. I’m not sure whether or not it improves upon them, either. It’s not a bad listen at all. I just need to hear it a time or two more to get a feel for what I think of it.
Tuesday has been very, very good to me.
