Music of the Moment: Built to Spill - Keep it Like a Secret

Massive amounts of guitar-generated goodness for your Monday afternoon!

A former co-worker tried passing on the power of BTS to me when he lent me his copy of this album. I locked in to one track, “Carry The Zero,” and never investigated much beyond that. When You In Reverse was released to rave reviews, I contemplated buying it for awhile and finally sprung for a copy. The resulting goodness forced me to go back and buy my very own copy of this one.

Doug Martsch: all the guitar, none of the histrionics. I’m not anti-histrionics, but I like some music to go with my guitar playing. Some players do a better job of that than others. Martsch doesn’t shred — although he sounds like he could — instead relying on a more textured, idea-based approach to playing. Very few guys can jam as long without resorting to shred or mindless noodling. Martsch is one of those guys.
