Music of the Moment: Gillian Welch - Revival

revival.jpg

I wonder if something in the timeless qualities of The Word rattled around in my brain and inspired me to queue up some Gillian Welch as a follow up. I don’t know if there is a connection in my desire to go from one to the next but there is a connection in the music.

Several of the songs from The Word are hymns that have been drastically reworked. Welch isn’t singing hymns but her songs do reach back to early folk, country, and Americana and somewhere these two stylistically divergent artists intersect.

It’s been awhile since I listened to these songs. I’ve spent more time listening to Time (The Revelator) than to any of her other albums. It’s a stunning record. Tonight I’m dusting off her T-Bone Burnett-produced debut Revival. There’s nothing on here that destroys and devastates in the same way “Dear Someone (from Time) does, but the quality of the music is uniformly rich and affecting.

I now have a profound desire to pour a scotch and turn the lights down so low they glow rather than shine…
