Music of the Moment: Oasis - “Cigarettes & Alcohol”

100 ball sweating degrees on a Friday morning and I have so mentally checked out, counting down the hours until the weekend begins. I put my iPod on random hoping I’d latch on to something to keep me upright for the remains of the day. It only took two songs to stumble on to the perfect anthem for the moment.

When I first heard “Cigarettes & Alcohol” lo those many years ago, I mistook it for nothing more than a celebration of rock star hedonism. I was wrong- well, partly wrong. It might sound like I’m making too much out of this, so let me explain. “Cigarettes & Alcohol” is a workingman’s blues about escape, about waking up one morning and realizing the work for the pay for the things equation got all out of whack somewhere along the lines. I don’t think Noel Gallagher has imparted crucial insight into the human psyche with this, but this more than the tale of low-rent debauchery put to a T-Rex riff.

Besides… it does have that T-Rex riff which does sound fabulous at impossibly high volume. This song just screams “weekend!”
