Musical Detours: All Roads Lead to Gillian Welch?

Maybe they don’t, but maybe they should.

I spent the morning listening to some Springsteen favorites on shuffle and followed that up by listening to Dan Wilson’s Free Life (more on that later…). After that, it was on to some Wilco and then Gillian Welch.

There’s a nice connective thread there and I’m sure if I worked hard enough, I could “6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon” that list but I’m not going to try.

Today’s album? Revival. AllMusicGuide likes this album better than her others. I was initially partial to Time (The Revelator), mostly because of the title track and the devastating “Dear Someone.” I still love those songs and that album, but Revival is probably a better, more cohesive album.

I once again thank and curse Duke, Mat Brewster, and Mark Saleski for introducing me to Gillian Welch.

  1. it’s the least i could do.

  2. I can’t speak for her own stuff (I’m slow, I know,) but that album she did with Ryan Adams and David Rawlings is pretty great, too.

  3. Yes, Heartbreaker is a marvelous record. You really need to check out her records, Tom. Incredible stuff.

Saleski… do you have a favorite?

  4. i don’t know if i have a favorite but tom really, really, REALLY needs to hear “Dear Someone”.

    devastating is the perfect description.

  5. Sorry, actually, I was thinking of Destroyer, the so-far unreleased album they did together. But, yeah, Heartbreaker is fantastic as well.

Speaking of Destroyer, what happened with that box set that was supposed to be out by now with that, 48 Hours (also great), and a couple other unreleased albums? Anybody heard anything?

Ms. Welch is on the “to check out” list now. I’m off to Amazon for clips right now.

  6. digital media has been served. i predict that tom will go home, listen to “Dear Someone” and then run outside to fling himself down on his dirt-colored gravel landscaping.

like josh, he will never be the same.
