Paul McCartney - Memory Almost Full

It’s 1:22am and I just finished my Paul McCartney review. I am amazed I was able to get it finished to coincide with the release date and proud of my self-editing. My reviews have been too wordy of late and needed a bit more streamlining. I did exceed the word count limit I set for myself but stayed mindful of not overwriting. By putting myself on a word count early, I omitted a lot of extraneous detail and found room for the most important points I wanted to make.

I’m a completist with a big mouth when it comes to writing about music. I like to talk about every song to prove I listened to the record and to shut people up. I can’t tell you how many times someone wants to argue with me about a record by mentioning things I didn’t mention. As a response to this, and because I sometimes fall in love with the sound of my own voice, I’ve tried to put express every idea I have about a record in my review. It’s not possible to do it but that hasn’t stopped me from trying. I am trying to improve in that regard. I’m also trying to be more efficient in my phrasing so I have more room to express more ideas without ballooning the word count to an unbearable length.

As you can see, I still have room to improve because I’ve just written a two paragraph preamble. In fairness, I’m writing as much about writing about the album as I am the record itself. I’ve been trying to come to grips with whether I like this one better than Chaos & Creation or not. I came to the conclusion it doesn’t really matter, but there is a relationship between the two records. I’m just not able to put my finger on it at present.

Memory Almost Full is out today and it’s really worth buying. Because McCartney has some annoying habits, his late-career revival is getting missed. Critics have (rightly) fallen all over themselves to praise latter-day Dylan records. They’ve not expended that same energy for McCartney’s recent work. While I’ll give Dylan the slight edge, McCartney is making some really nice records of late and you’re missing out if you’ve not been investigating them. Memory is going to be on sale at a damn reasonable price this week. It’s worth it.
