Putting My Money Where My Mouth Is
I did it. I ordered a proper copy of Peter Karp’s Shadows and Cracks album tonight.
The copy I have at present was provided to me by a contact at Blind Pig, for which I am now deeply in her debt. Well, I’m $16.98 in debt to Amazon. Anyway, the advance copy I got was not the full retail enchilada. It came in a little envelope along with the original booklet. TheWifeToWhomI’mMarried doesn’t understand why this isn’t enough. Translation: You are such a big dope.
While that may be true, it is truly just further evidence of my Fanboy tendencies. What I have is good enough, or rather was good enough. It allowed me to write a review. It allowed me to become a fan. Now, I have “The Collection” to think of. I have an overflowing CD tower and it just wouldn’t feel right if I couldn’t put this album on that tower. That can’t happen until I have a true copy of it. It should be here Friday and then the cycle is complete. It’s the circle of life, Simba.

I’m the same way, man. I can’t settle for “just the disc” - I have to have the whole thing or it never feels right. I can’t count how many times I’ve had a pre-release version of something, or even just mp3s to preview an album, and never quite got into it until I had the full package. It looks rather sad to some, but I try to think of it like one would a book collection. Sure, you can have the pages typed out without the covers, artwork, etc., but do you really want to have that in your bookcase?
I knew you and Saleski would understand the motivation. It’s one of the things I’ll never be able to embrace or understand about digital music. Don’t get me wrong, I fucking love my iPod and have dedicated a column to it but it’s not the same as having the CD. The tangible object in all its true glory is part of the experience. The book example is a good one.
