Robert Randolph Gives Wake Up Calls, Doesn’t Make Coffee
“Ain’t Nothing Wrong With It” by Robert Randolph & The Family Band might be the best wake-up song ever. I actually rolled my dead ass out of bed and started getting ready for work before the end of the song, and I did it with a smile on my face. If only he would have brought me a cup of coffee and a newspaper.
I woke up this morning, reached for the remote control, and with sleep still stinging my eyes flipped through the channels. The haze was pierced by the stinging sounds of Randolph’s sacred steel. Life returned to my limbs by the power of the song’s big, stomping rhythm. I listened to a little more RR in the car on the way into work and have queued it up on the iPod now that I’m here. I have to pack my cube today so I can be moved across the hall tomorrow (it’s only half as stupid as it sounds). Too bad the Family Band doesn’t pack boxes.
I’ve taken a few shots at VH-1 recently. I’ve done it because they deserve it and because I can more clearly remember when they didn’t suck. MTV has blown for so long I no longer remember the difference. It’s different with VH-1. I wish we could get the folks at their “Save The Music” campaign to do something about the programming. For example, more Randolph and less of what followed him: Hinder. That nearly killed my buzz and fresh, new “up with people” attitude.
