What’s The Name of That Song: Screaming Trees - “Nearly Lost You”

16,334 songs on an iPod is a lot to keep up with. I’d love to tell you I have an encyclopedic knowledge of every minute of every song, but that’s nowhere near true. Still, I remember more about more of them than you might think.

Take today for example. I was hanging a smoke at work when the middle section of a song popped into my head. I couldn’t immediately tell you which song it was, but I like this part of the song. The rhythm guitar mostly drops out, leaving just a little wah-wah guitar over the top of the bass riff and the drums. The thing I like most about is the drums. The Alex Van Halens of the world would turn a segment like that into a torrent of treble, crashing and clanging various cymbals until the vessels in your eye explodes. The drummer playing this little bit stays off the cymbal for most of the repeated pattern, building this really cool groove that clicks with the rumbling bass.

I could not remember which song this was and it was bothering me. Fast forward a couple hours later. I’m outside my apartment once again hanging a smoke when I start singing, “I nearly lost you…”

“Nearly Lost You.” Screaming Trees. Sweet Oblivion. Barrett Martin. One of the great gems of the ’90s. Go check that one out and listen for that bridge about 2/3 of the way into the song.
