Music of the Moment: U2 - The Joshua Tree

After spending 90 odd minutes talking about U2 on the B-Sides Concept Album program the other night, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised I was overtaken by the urge to listen to them.

I just got done listening to Passengers again. If you’re not savvy to Passengers, you’re not alone. It’s a U2 album that’s not really a U2 album. Passengers is a collaboration between U2 and Brian Eno, the band’s longtime producer. Most of the album is moody, ambient, atmospheric music more typical of Eno’s solo work. Occasionally, U2’s musical persona shines through (”Your Blue Room,” “Slug,” “Miss Sarajevo”). It’s a wonderful listen and must not be listened to in any sort of lossy format. Listen to the CD, or listen to it as a WAV, FLAC, or Apple Lossless. Okay, it really is time for me to stop banging away about that.

I’ve decided to follow that up with The Joshua Tree remaster. Shit! There’s that word again. Here’s the thing, though: they did such a great job with the remaster we don’t really have to talk about it. I’m listening to the album because it is what it’s always been… an absolute classic. “With Or Without You” might be the last time these guys did anything as grand and understated at the same time. What an amazing song.

Of course on an early Saturday morning like this, when I’m at work and not at home, “Running to Stand Still” is more the vibe of the day.
