CD Roundup: Semisonic, Foo Fighters, and American Music Club

And in the silence…

Yes, the world has stopped spinning for five minutes and I’m filled with enough energy and inspiration to commit words to page. TheWifeToWhomI’mMarried is off to visit her family and I’m home from work with nothing but three cats, 1,000 CDs, and some time. This is not a bad way to spend an evening.

I strolled through a used CD store last night after dinner and picked up three discs for $20. I got a copy of the Foo Fighters live set Skin & Bones. My brother saw them in Birmingham last weekend and really enjoyed the show. He bought S&B and told me I should, too. I passed on buying it after friend of the site Tom Johnson warned me of this little bit of trickery. I decided that trickery didn’t bother me so much at $7.99.

I also bought a copy of Love Songs for Patriots by American Music Club. I was introduced to AMC through frontman Mark Eitzel’s appearance on Tuatara’s East of the Sun CD. That got me to track down a used copy of their Everclear album, which I liked enough to take a chance on LSFP. It was $4.99. I’ve taken larger gambles than that.

Lastly, I bought a copy of Semisonic’s Feeling Strangely Fine CD. I’ve been looking for one ever since Dan Wilson released his Free Life album last year and I found one for $4.99 last night. Done. I’m listening to it now and I like it. I really do. But. I don’t like the sound of the record, the way it was recorded. At least I don’t think I do. I’m listening to AACs of the album so maybe it sounds better on CD. I need to find out. The treble and the cymbals are very irritating to my ears even if the songcraft on the record is very good. No one will ever remaster this record but I have a feeling they probably should.
