The First Great Record of 2008: The Gutter Twins – Saturnalia

It’s been a slow year for new releases so far and that has been part of the reason things have been slow around here. This is where it all turns around.

The Gutter Twins’ debut record released Tuesday. I got it Monday night but didn’t get to really start listening to it until yesterday and now it’s all I want to listen to ever for the rest of my life. Okay, slight exaggeration, but only a slight exaggeration.

I’m going to resist the urge to call my shot in March and call this the album of the year, but I’m telling you it’s a heavyweight contender. This is just what I’ve needed. I feel refreshed and renewed by this music, which is odd because it’s not the most uplifting music in history. It’s also not the darkest record either have made. There is a current of “spirituality” that runs through these lyrics.

These are sinners’ tales not unlike the kind Johnny Cash used to sing; just a hint of a wink and smile to the decadent times that nearly destroyed mixed with regret and a grasp for redemption.

All is quiet on New Year’s Day. 2008 just got it’s first kick in the ass. Little girls might twitch with the way I hitch but when I burn it’s a son of a bitch.
